I suggest the Barred Rock and Buff Orpingtons breeds, they're friendly and good layers. Easter Eggers not a bad choice either.

With our Minnesota weather try to avoid single comb breeds.. They will get frostbite and fall off the first winter...EE are fun and a good choice for a small layer flock.
