Hello fellow BYCers!
I recently joined this site to learn all I could about chickens but I don't think I'll ever stop learning because there is so much to know! We bought 6 chicks on March 7 and they were about 4 days old then. My next door neighbor also bought 6 chicks that day and we are doing our chicken adventure together so we have 12 chicks total. In the beginning I had no idea what type of chicks we had but thanks to this site I now know that we have 2 Red Sex-Links, 1 Barred Rock pullet, 1 White Rock pullet, 2 Ancona pullets, 1 Rhode Island Red cockerel, 3 Buff Opringtons (2 pullets and 1 cockerel), 1 Bantam Cochin pullet, and 1 OEG BBR bantam cockerel. We are having a great time with our chicks and learning so much!
Our chicks have a good sized coop (converted shed) and a small covered run. They get to free range in the back yard all day when the weather permits. We recently adopted a Border Collie/Great Pyrenees puppy and she has been absolutely great with the chickens. She is a great help when we want them to go in the coop before they are ready because she just herds them right in. She sleeps in their covered run at night to provide a little more protection from night time predators.
I am in the beginning stages of building 2 or 3 smaller coops because I would like to start breeding Silkies, Polish, and OEGB's. I want to eventually work my way toward breeding Sizzles but I need to learn more about the genetic side to ensure I do that correctly!
Here's a pic of some of some of my chickens hard at work "debugging" our yard!
