Hi! Last week I knew nothing about chickens whatsoever. Last week I also ended up with three Ameraucana hens. I think they are a month old, or thereabouts. They had enough feathers that we decided to put them outside today. Our weather is often perfect so it was no issue.

I found this group when Athena (second picture) was lying down funny and I wanted someone to tell me she was okay. :) I'm hoping that's just the way she sits... like I said, I'm new to this. :) They had been on a newspaper-lined cardboard box, and then I read that that can hurt their legs so I switched to paper towels (not cheap). But now they're outside. Oh I hope the newspaper didn't hurt them!

I'd appreciate any insider knowledge any of you can give me. I already love these silly creatures and want to take the very best care of them.

What I'm seeing in your photo is your little one basking in the sunlight and stretching...mine do it all the time...not to worry, you new chicken papa!!

Welcome to BYC!

Don't worry, she is just sunbathing! They do that all the time in the sun. As for the newspaper, it can be slippery for the birds and can cause sprains, tears and is hard on baby chicks. Paper towels are much better for babies. Your flock looks good! Field trips are great for them too.

Enjoy your new flock and welcome to our flock!

In the second picture, it looks like there is a black dog watching them. If so PLEASE make sure he is supervised. Dogs usually regard chickens as squeaky toys - when they stop squeaking (dead) the dog will go on to another one.

I don't have a dog; that's my phone's shadow. I'm using it to take pictures. :)
