Welcome Andrea, I was looking for the usual Michigan crowd and found your post. There is a big MI group post if you go to Michigan by Grammi.
Yes, it's a very friendly place to visit. Everyone is quick to reply if you have a question or concern. Hope you enjoy a lot more lurking.

Hello! I live in Algonac which is about an hour from Detroit. We just got the rest of our order today that didn't come in last week. TSC is no threat...... knowing I can call the grain elevator anytime and order more babies is NOT good. We have 30 baby chicks, 7 baby turkeys and 12 baby ducks and I still want more!! The ducks are comics and the turkeys just want to cuddle and fall asleep on you, the chicks seem indifferent except the Isa Browns and EE's like to cuddle.

Hi!

I'm also from SE Michigan (Troy) and we want to get some backyard chickens (NOW!). We were planning on it a few years ago but weren't able to then, but now we can. Please tell me - where can I get chicks??? Is mail order my only choice?

We want (relatively) calm, quiet, good layers, maybe 6 birds to start? When I do the breed choosers on the web sites and then look for those varieties they are all sold out everywhere I look. Orpingtons, Isa Browns, Rhode Isalnd reds, Delaware, Australorp... how can I get some chicks? They need to be feathered and coop ready by the time we will be going away in August. We have someone to take care of them but only if they are in the coop by then.

detroy,

I think a few of the hatcheries will mail as few as 15 birds.
Correct me if I'm wrong everyone else-does My Pet Chicken allow you to order only 15? You can go in with someone.

I think most of the feed stores are done with chicks for the season. Check Craigs list and Hoobly. If you are interested, I have mixed chicks for sale for $2 each. I just listed them on both of these sites but there are others listed there also. Check out all the ads. Several are near enough to you. I am in Clarkston.

Good luck,

Melanie

By the way, welcome. There is a big MI group here. Go back to the index and check out the other MI thread, I think it says "by Grammi". That is the thread that most of us chat on.

Welcome Andrea! My husband is from the downriver area but we're living up north near Alpena now.

..

Hey detroy, have you tried Townline Hatchery in Zeeland? I don't know what they have available now, but they do sell buff orps, Isa Browns and Australorps.

I just ordered from Meyer in Ohio though so I could get something different. I bought buckeyes and GL Wyandottes. (Seemed appropriate since DH was born in Wyandotte.)
