I've got 3 Barred Rock and 3 Rhode Island Red. They are 5+ years old, and though they are my first chickens, they aren't my first chicken experience. My grandma had chickens on her farm when I was a kid, and my brother has about 100 layers and sells eggs.
My chickens are slowing down on egg production and even at high egg prices, they aren't really paying their way at this point. I'm in Socal with a 25' x 50' back yard, and their coop & run take up about a third of it. So I'm trying to decide whether to rotate my chicken flock or switch to quail. I've lurked on this site before but never got around to joining. When I was searching for some stuff about quail, I actually ended up here. Since it seems like a good place to be whether I stick with chickens or switch to quail, I decided I should go ahead and join.
