Hi! From South Australia.

Hi and :welcome

Also from SA.
We used cardboard box to keep our chicks in, and the light also got pretty hot, but as long as it's not touching anything it should be fine. Good advice from TwoCrows.

Good luck and have fun! (I love the chick's name :p)

Thank you to all your warm greetings and advice!

Black-boogey has started snuggling under my chin whilst I watch lectures online and when I give the other little girl attention BB bumps her out of the way (trying to find a name that fits her; although, I seem to call her Pecky McPeckpeck a lot. She pecks EVERYTHING; the dried poo from BB, my freckles on my arm, she even tries preening my eyelashes and eyebrows and decided to try and grab an eyeball the other day.

I am unsure what they are going to be; I was told that they are Silkie bantams, but their new feathers are too 'common', they aren't fluffy. Only Pecky McPeckpeck has the fifth toe, but pink skin. Then BB has black skin and no fifth toe....I wonder if they are crossbred? I know my sister encountered a lone frizzle among all the new chicks. Recessive gene in the roost maybe?

Anyhow! thanks for all the advice....leaving a heat lamp on all night kind of freaks me out regardless, I wake up every couple of hours and have to check them. Strangely, I'm not worried about the house burning down as much as I am waking up to roast chicken for breakfast. :-/

Cheers!

My guess is that they are Silkie crosses. True Silkies should have the Silkie feathering and black skin.
