Hi everyone, been lurking on this site last couple of days working up the courage to say hi, reading everyone's posts and looking at the gorgeous photos you all have of your chickens.
I'm in the UK, in Scotland and this is my first time raising chickens, my partner has had them before we met when he worked on a big estate, But this is a first for me. We have recently moved to a more rural area and our landlord has agreed to let us keep some chickens up in the old chicken pen. So for the last couple of weeks we have been hammering fixing and building awaiting the arrival of our new babies, who arrived last Friday.
We have 2 Bovans Nera's, 1 Bovans Goldline and a Sussex Star. We then a day later acquired a maran x cockerel to look after the girls for us. He is a stunner, they all are gorgeous though. All were very timid and hid in their coop until the boy arrived the next day and since that moment, when they all ran out to meet him, they have stuck together like glue.

Hello from Oregon & welcome to BYC. This is a great site for info as well as meeting other chicken enthusiasts from all over. Best of luck with your new flock.

Welcome to BYC from California wine country in the Western Sierra Foothills. :frow

I was SO surprised to discover chickens have individual personalities when I first started keeping them. Never would have imagined that beforehand. A rooster really adds dimension to a flock and I love watching them do their roosterly duties (not THAT one, but the settling hen squabbles, calling his ladies for treats, alerting them to possible danger, THOSE duties).

Even if mine never laid an egg I would still keep chickens. There's nothing sillier looking than a fluffy hen running. And if one has found something good, the others chasing her to get it for themselves is just a riot of the cutest sort.

Thanks for the welcome folks

Gryeyes - I know, I like that about the lad as well, just before a heavy rain shower today he suddenly started to calling the girls warning them about something, and they all ran inside, we were wondering what on earth was going on, then the heavens opened

They are so amusing, I love watching them chasing flies like deranged fools
