Hi, I'm new here. I had never heard of such a thing as backyard chickens a month or so ago. I have been trying to get as organic and natural a diet as possible, because I have metastatic breast cancer and would like to live a while longer. I kept thinking about how I wish I could have a few chickens, and suddenly thought, why not?! So I researched and found that there are currently no laws at all in my area. My back yard is SO perfect for chickens. So my son built me a coop in the basement and we set off to find someone who had hens. I wasn't sure about chicks because I'm so new at it and I was afraid I'd hurt the little ones accidentally somehow. So I got five red comets, all look exactly alike, and we've had them for about 3 weeks now.
I have had cats and love them, but chickens are...so different! My girls are so gentle and quiet, they get along fine with the cats, they lay beautiful eggs, and, well, I can't believe I waited so long to have chickens! They are so good for my soul.
Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself. I have a sister and 3 kids living with me (2 of them back and forth from college, the youngest is 8), and we have all pitched in and made this a family project. In spite of the legalities being okay, we haven't told the neighbors...my own extended family thinks I'm nuts as it is! Looking forward to gaining a lot of knowlege about caring for these lovely and gentle creatures from all of you more experienced people out there!
