Hi, I'm new here. I had never heard of such a thing as backyard chickens a month or so ago. I have been trying to get as organic and natural a diet as possible, because I have metastatic breast cancer and would like to live a while longer. I kept thinking about how I wish I could have a few chickens, and suddenly thought, why not?! So I researched and found that there are currently no laws at all in my area. My back yard is SO perfect for chickens. So my son built me a coop in the basement and we set off to find someone who had hens. I wasn't sure about chicks because I'm so new at it and I was afraid I'd hurt the little ones accidentally somehow. So I got five red comets, all look exactly alike, and we've had them for about 3 weeks now.

I have had cats and love them, but chickens are...so different! My girls are so gentle and quiet, they get along fine with the cats, they lay beautiful eggs, and, well, I can't believe I waited so long to have chickens! They are so good for my soul.

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself. I have a sister and 3 kids living with me (2 of them back and forth from college, the youngest is 8), and we have all pitched in and made this a family project. In spite of the legalities being okay, we haven't told the neighbors...my own extended family thinks I'm nuts as it is! Looking forward to gaining a lot of knowlege about caring for these lovely and gentle creatures from all of you more experienced people out there!

Hello from Virginia.....welcome to the nut house. I am a stay at home mom with boocoo chickens and guineas. My whole family and my in-laws think I am full on nuts, but hey we love it here! Congrats on your new babies, they are a lot of fun. You will find a lot of like minded individuals here so welcome to the family!

I'm in Virginia, too, just north of Lynchburg. I was surprised at how much I love being with the chickens after I got them. I didn't expect to feel that way, either. Now that I'm used to eating fresh eggs, I can't ever go back to NOT having chickens. Glad you joined the forum and I hope you feel better soon!

Hello raro and welcome!

I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying your chickens. I just love mine too! They are such funny, interesting and curious little characters. You're right, they are truly good for the soul......

Hope everything is OK with your health now, and keep in touch! This is a wonderful site and you'd be surprised how addicting it is!

Sincerely,
Sharon
