West side. by Cottonwood Airport. My ladies are doing good. they won't go outside when really cold but those last two days when it was in the 40s they were out eating the snow. Otherwise they stay in their nice new home that we built for them this past late summer. I am getting from 2 to 6 eggs a day. colder weather they are producing as much but still get something. We use Waynes Feed to get our chicken food. Organic no soy formula. I got my Hen from Farm and Fleet on West state. Where do you live? sasimpson77
Hi I live on the west side of Rockford just out side of town near meridian and w. State St. I am glad to hear your chickens don't go outside in the cold either lol mine were out for those couple days as well In the summer they free range my property but obviously have no interest in doing so now. The chickens are my kids 4-H project but I sure am enjoying them. We have 19 hens right now and they are just starting to lay again after almost a month of no eggs. I hope they keep it up the kids use the money they make off the eggs to pay for the feed and next year I plan on expanding there coop a lot. I do like Wayne's Feed but have not priced out his feed about what does it run you? Kids are going to start hatching eggs out soon hopefully they each got an incubator for Christmas. I am worried about our girls and the cold spell that is coming up I am already having issues with frostbite on one of my hens that has a larger comb. When does Farm and Fleet normally get there chicks in?
I have only 6 barred rock. F&F get them in on May 1st. You order like in March or even Feb. then they get them May 1st. I have a heater in my coop. We put up a 10 x 10 foot shed with part being their coop and the other half their food and straw storage area. I pay bout 29.00 for this organic no soy feed. it is in a 40 or 50 lb bag I think. I got my chickens last may and have not started selling eggs yet. Getting some long horns this spring. we eat a lot of eggs. I was in 4 H when I was a kid. cool thing. My neighbor is having her chickens processed I think right now. they stopped laying. and as she said a non layer is better in the freezer. lol I have to go down today and check them out. One had a bloody comb after it had jumped the 8 foot privacy fence between her yard and mine. I think her hens attacked her slightly. My neighbors dog protected her till they realized she was there and called me. lol I had put a saw horse somewhat close to the fence and she used that to jump over. lol my crazy one I call number 6. she is the last one to go in the yard when free ranging and the last to go in at night on good days. lol and the one to do all the crazy stuff.
There always seems to be that one crazy chicken. I would like to process any extra roosters we get. Where does she take them or does she do it herself. We have had a stream of bad luck with our chickens we have lost all but two of the original 8 we started out with and we lost a few others. I lost quite a few to a dog (I believe I have fixed that problem), and then we bought 16 hens from a farmer who decided they weren't laying and he did not want to feed them until they start laying again. I lost a couple of those hens I believe to them just not being able to withstand the weather and age. I believe they were fairly old all he could tell me is they ranged from a year to much older. They are not very friendly hens but are coming around and seem to realize we provide dinner and treats. I have been feeding them layer mixed with corn and oats and have also been giving them soaked beet pulp in the evenings. They clean everything we give them up. I have a little bit of heat in there house but it is not enough obviously so we will have to make some adjustments come summer. It is defintly a learning process and we only got our property in August Idealy I would love to find a shed to have as a hen house but I am a single mom on a single income lol and we have to make do with what we have. Its so nice to talk to someone in this area who also has chickens.
