Hi guys and gals. Small chicken raising effort from Waco, Texas

Question: What all goes in a chicken coop hen house besides where they lay the eggs and a roosting bar? What can you store in it if it's big enough? I'm converting an old kids playhouse into a chicken coop with hen house and I hate to loose the storage space if I can keep from it. I know better to keep poisonous anything in it of course, but do any of y'all keep tools, yard tools, feed canisters, etc in your hen house? I'd hang them out of the way of course. I'm just wondering what some of you guys do or don't do from experience when it comes to the hen house?
Welcome to BYC!! I recommend sand or something quite similar for the litter on the floor, to make it easy to scoop poop (you’re going to need a scoop btw ;)). You can place a waterer in there on a base, and a feeding trough/tube/feeder. You can also put pine shavings for bedding in the nesting boxes.

:welcome

Hi, what are the dimensions of your coop and how many birds do you (or will you) have? You may or may not have extra room for storage. But if you do, I've kept feed in big metal trash cans with lids in the coop...metal to deter things like mice & rats.
The coop is 6' x 11' and attached hen house is 6' x 7'. The total height of both is around 80" I have 6 pullets now, but I think I'll have room for 6 more. I made a 3 compartment nesting box at 16" x 16" per compartment I'm going to hang on the lower part of the wall in the hen house tomorrow. I had saved a broken wooden closet rod I had replaced a year or so back so I cut it down to size and attached it to the front of the nesting box for a roosting bar. I'm not sure how high to hang the nesting box off the floor though.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

If it's big enough, you can store all your chicken goods in your coop. Just remember, not including nest boxes and roosts, chickens need about 5 square feet per bird in the coop. Don't forget ventilation in your eaves, 1/2 to 1 square foot vent space per bird.

Good luck, let us know if you have any questions about anything!
Well, I've got 66 sq ft of coop space and 6 chickens and was planning on 6 more so That's just about right. The hen house is an 6' x 7' x 80" children's playhouse the previous owner built and has 3 good size windows which should be plenty of ventilation. I just put poultry wire over the openings and will attach plywood doors to close during the winter months. I finished up the roof where I had to repair a couple of holes. The previous owner had left two flats of new shingles in the garage too! I attached what I have done so far. I think I'll hang the nesting box low off the floor of the hen house and enclose the area above it with a couple of doors to have a cabinet for storage, unless you think I'll need more nesting box space. The nesting box now is 3 compartments @ 16' x 16" each.

Looks like it will be a nice coop!

:welcome I'm about 40 minutes east of Waco. I have a small shelf above my roosts, it has a plastic container of pdz for the poop boards, a plastic container of treats, and a plastic tub with permethrin powder, Martin's spray, hand broom for dusting, and a dust pan.
You're close to Hubbard where I was raised. My grandkids live there with their mom and dad. Where do you get your permethrin powder and martin's spray. I've been getting my chick supplies from Attwoods
