We just got our first chicks! We got 6 one week old Svart Hona’s. We’ve never raised chickens before and are so completely excited. We have them in the den for now...under a heat lamp with scratch and water. They are our first livestock type animal. We have two German Shepherds and two Yorkies. We’re excited to learn as much as we can about raising chickens, more specifically these Svart Honas.

Welcome to BYC. Chicks should be on chick starter type feed, not scratch. Scratch does not have enough nutrition for them.

Use chick starter, not scratch since they don’t have the grit to break down the scratch yet.

Welcome to BYC, I agree with the others about the chick starter vs scratch, while I might be wrong, I believe scratch is a treat not their food. I have my chicks on chick starter and then they move into a layer feed, they get scratch as a treat in the afternoons, they sure know what my coming near the fence can mean, they rush the wire of the run.

Hello, and welcome! Good luck with your new chick's, but get them some chick starter feed. That is what they need more than anything but water at this time.
