Hi my name is jane and i live in nebraska, we just got 33 chicks last week and today one is bleeding by his butt and the others are pecking at it. does anyone know what we should do?thx,jj

Hello and welcome to BYC.

First you need to separate him from the others so he can heal. Then you need to take a closer look and see if it is an injury near his vent or if he is bleeding from his vent.

If you don't have a secondary place to put him maybe you can separate him within the brooder. Either way it won't stop bleeding if his brood mates keep picking at it.

Let us know what you find when you look a little closer. A pic would be great!

I would just clean it off with warm water, or betadine or something. Dry it and apply a tiny bit of neosporin or polysporin. Just make sure it does not contain any painkiller.

Never figured out the pic thing. You can add pics to your profile directly from an IPhone but I think you need to use photobucket to post them on threads.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your chick, hope it is OK. X2 get the chick separated, you can put something like neosporin (without the pain relief) on his cut. There is a spray called Blue-Cote you can get at feed stores etc to spray on wounds that helps keep other chickens from pecking at them. Is he the only one that has been picked on? Here is a link that tells you different ways to post pictures https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/inserting-pics-in-on-the-new-byc

X3. Get this little one separated. If you only have one heat lamp, you can make a divided off section or just down the middle for now and put the heat in the center of the two. Then all the chicks will have heat. You can apply some neosporin without the pain killer, as Kelsie has suggested until it heals.

Make sure you are not over heating your babies. This will cause them to turn on each other. Your temp should be somewhere around 90 or upper 80's. And don't over crowd them either. They should have at least 1/2 square foot per bird right now.

Good luck with your babies and enjoy all your new adventures with them!

hello there, thanks for the tips on my chicky.do you know if something is lacking in their diet?they are only 3 weeks old.Or is this normal?thanks agin, jj

If they picked on this little one, then it is not dietary and is possible bullying. In this case, you will need to make more room in the brooder and also lower your heat a bit. Over heated chicks pick on each other.

If he truly has a problem with his butt, then no, this is not normal.

Keep us posted!
