Hello Bear! welcome to BYC ! sorry to here your news Isn't much you can do .

I gave her a bath which seemed to perk her up a bit. But upon further discovery, I found a wound that I hadn't noticed. There were maggots crawling in the wound. I picked out all that I could see and put antibiotic cream on her wound. Hoping it helps. I am beside myself and blame myself for what happened to her.

I'm so sorry you found an unnoticed wound with maggots in it. But, I'm glad you did find it and took them out. Good work.
You know, we/you as Chicken keepers do our best to keep up with our flock. But sometimes, life just get ahead of us. Why is that???
Because WE are HUMAN.
YOU are HUMAN.
It has happened to everyone of us and if a sad event hasn't happened yet, it will.
That's the nature of rearing chickens.
She has had a very good life with you and that's been proven because she is six years old!
That in itself is amazing.
Please, do not be so hard on yourself.
Give yourself the credit you deserve and give yourself and your lovely hen a hug.
Welcome to BYC where Everyone is Family and we feel your pain.
Your Not alone here on BYC.
