I was born and raised in a small town in central Wisconsin. My father used to raise chickens when I was a little girl but I don't remember much since that was over 45 years ago.
My husband calls me of the Critter collector. I have two dogs, three ferrets, one chinchilla and now 16 chicks.
I might as well say I am completely new to raising chickens since I probably have a proximately 2 months experience from 40 years ago when my father had some down in Texas when I was a little girl.
I'm disabled with MS, so to keep myself active, I thought adding chickens to my menagerie would be a great way to keep my self active, get some exercise and enjoy life outside once again. And also who doesn't love fresh eggs straight from your own backyard. I know I do.
So needless to say, I've decided to not only raise the the hens for laying but I've also decided to raised them for meat also, SSDI doesn't cover much and I like to know what goes in my food. I plan on trying to raise them organically. I get enough chemicals in my system with the medications I'm on due to my illness.
My hubby Brain and i live in North Central Wisconsin and a huge town of 54 individuals, which is life of luxury to me.
I have to say I absolutely love this site I've gained quite a bit of knowledge over the past few months getting ready to start up my chicken coop. Since we do live in Wisconsin and it is quite cold outside to start our adventure, we decided to build a 4-foot by 8-foot brood pen in our bedroom for the winter since they will need to be in the house at least until the beginning of May, since that looks like when we'll be getting our final Frost.
Once the thaw comes we will cut it down and made it into brooding pens for the hens that we decide to breed and of course quarantine in my gardening shed.
We went a bit big on her chicken run. It's 40 ft by 40 ft and we have three separate hen houses with 6 nesting boxes a piece so there's plenty of space for a few more later. I have a medium sized Garden that is 30 ft by 50 ft. I also want to train them to be free range because we live on four and a half acres with a pond. They should have plenty to Feast on besides the herb Dan Green Garden I will be creating around there run.
The type of chicks I decided to get are the Rhode Island Reds, Easter Eggers, Plymouth Rock AKA Barbed Rock, Brown leghorns and New Hampshire for the hens. I did get 1 male and for the life of me I cannot remember what kind of breed he is, I just asked the farmer that owns the feed store to tell me which one would be the best and the quietest because I have love dogs. Neighbors probably would enjoy a little bit of quietness come from the house.
Looking forward to learning lots more on this site as I all ready have and maybe make some friends and connections in the Shawano County, Wisconsin area through the site.
