Hi, I'm considering raising chickens in the near future, so I joined this group to learn as much as possible.

I'm still not sure what breeds I want, I love them all...were considering orpingtons, buckeye, barred rock, Cochin, and marans. We live off grid north, northern Nevada in the mountains and we need a dual purpose, cold resistant bird.
I would go with American Bresse Chickens. I started with Jersey Giants, Buff Orpingtons, white Rhode Islands, and Australorps, and in age comparison their body is more meaty and they mature faster. In addition, the Bresse hens will lay eggs one month early than other heritage breeds. Its also rated the best tasting chicken in the world by the French.

I did the same thing by joining this forum before I had chickens for ‘future research’. Well all that did was create chicken craze and I think I had my chicks a few weeks later lol have fun!

I am currently hatching Barbeziuex, Its another French chicken, but unlike the way its French cousin Bresse is sautéed and poached to perfection, This one suppose to taste better roasted on an open fire or oven.

For me, I live in a residential area, and get into trouble if my chickens doesn't stay in my fenced yard. In addition, loud crowing, and bad odor are other things that can ruin it for me. We have a two chicken limit, but its okay to have more if I don't give the neighbors anything to complain about. Basically, I will only get into trouble if they officially complain.

My heritage roosters were too loud and needed to be sent to the freezer. I kept one Jersey Giant rooster, but ironically a few days latter, he had a heart attack. I think he died from the extremely loud illegal fire work bombs that was going off in my neighborhood. It was so loud, it triggered all the car alarms on the street. The point here is to keep an extra rooster, until the next generation hatches. No crow velcro collars can be adjusted to keep the crow pitch down to an acceptable level.

The only concern I have with raising the Barbezuiex, is its flightiness, it may not recognize its territorial fenced barrier like other heritage breeds, so I will need to raise it in a chicken coop.
