I'm looking to start a small mixed backyard flock of hens for eggs and to become beloved free-range pets. I could use some help and advice, starting with where to buy them..?

Thank you, I'm located in George, WC. Do you know of any breeders or hatcheries within a 2-3 hour radius of my location. I would like to pick up the hens in person. I don't feel comfortable buying online and hoping for delivery. I've been intensely searching the web and all I find is scam websites.
Hi, it's nice to have you here! There are several ways to obtain chickens (or chicks):
breeders
mail order hatcheries
farm stores
BYC buy-sell-trade forum
Facebook groups
Those are some that come to mind, there are probably other places too. This article from the Learning Center might help get you started: FAQ about Raising Chickens
Always feel free to ask questions, we're all here to help!
Yes, I'm looking for 5 young pet hens, preferably unique breeds such as:Welcome to BYC. A hatchery or Tractor Supply, or a similar store will sell pullets. Don't make the mistake of buying straight run.
It's best to start with pullets only if you want a small, pets only, flock.
