Hi, I'm new to raising chickens.

:welcome

Hi, it's nice to have you here! There are several ways to obtain chickens (or chicks):
breeders
mail order hatcheries
farm stores
BYC buy-sell-trade forum
Facebook groups

Those are some that come to mind, there are probably other places too. This article from the Learning Center might help get you started: FAQ about Raising Chickens

Always feel free to ask questions, we're all here to help!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I would first start with learning what housing needs they have and building a proper coop and run for them. THEN get chicks and brood them in the coop. I ordered my first set of chick from Meyer Hatchery. BUT I also had them shipped to me during mild temperatures to reduce the stress on them. All survived the journey through the USPS.

Thank you, I'm located in George, WC. Do you know of any breeders or hatcheries within a 2-3 hour radius of my location. I would like to pick up the hens in person. I don't feel comfortable buying online and hoping for delivery. I've been intensely searching the web and all I find is scam websites.

Welcome to BYC. A hatchery or Tractor Supply, or a similar store will sell pullets. Don't make the mistake of buying straight run.
It's best to start with pullets only if you want a small, pets only, flock.
Yes, I'm looking for 5 young pet hens, preferably unique breeds such as:
Silkies
Buff Orpingtons
Light Sussex
Brahma
Ameraucana
Easter Eggers
Olive Eggers
Cream Legbar

I figure I might as well aim for fun eggs and quirky personalities since I'll have them for years. I'm avoiding mass production hens from large corporate hatcheries.

I'm struggling to find breeders or small hatcheries in my area. I'm located in George, WC. Do you know of any breeders within a 2-3 hour drive of me?

Are you in South Africa? (That's the info doing a search of George, WC gives back.)

Maybe by looking over these links of country threads, you can find a link that will point you to the area closest to your location: Find your State or Country Thread

I'm looking to start a small mixed backyard flock of hens for eggs and to become beloved free-range pets. I could use some help and advice, starting with where to buy them..? :frow
are you in the states? I would see if there is a Tractor Supply near you.

also, people will tell you that Rhode Island Reds are "docile", but if I were you, I would go with Plymouth Barred Rocks, Bearded Americanas, Orpingtons, or Australorps.
