hi, i'm pretty's mom

pretty is about 5mos old wild wood duck we found in our front yard when it was about 4 days old. wanted to join so that i can read and ask questions about his well being.
want to know if anyone knows how to tell if a wood duck is happy being by himself.[/QUOTE

Very few animals live alone. I started with 4 Peking ducks and got down to one single duck. She ended up moving herself to live with the family dog. She would go forage and a swim during the day but always stayed with the dog at all other times. The duck and dog shared the dog food from the food dish, eating at the same time. I would expect your duck to leave on her own if she is loose and hears other ducks of her kind.
Good luck

Hello and welcome to BYC!! It’s so nice to have you join us. welcome.gif

I hatched 4 blue-winged teal ducks eggs from a nest destroyed by our haying equipment. The ducklings were raised with my hatched chicks and raised in the coop. They left us in the fall and stayed at a nearby pond. Presumably, they flew south when the rest of the ducks did which was the best case scenario. We still think about them and hope they're ok. That was good of you to save the duckling. :clap
