Hi I'm terrie. I have only one chick. She was abandoned by the mother after a dog chased them and the chick got separated. I have had her a month now.

Tonight brat is her name (I assume it's a she) ate whole cooked corn and a lot of them. Now brat is chirping in pain and gaped mouth. Brat is also in a crouched position and slowly moving around but is very alert and pecks when picked up. She was abandoned after about 3 to 5 days after coming out of the egg. I assume don't know age for sure. I have two kids and a dog. A Chihuahua and they do get along. She is a pet to my daughter. My daughter claimed her.i did get starter feed but had been giving a extensive diet. I even recently got her probiotic water because of a sneeze she had turns out to be just dirt. I only recently come to know about backyard chickens and your posts have helped before but now I'm trying to get specifics.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens they cannot digest whole corn at that age but she will probably be alright .. you will need to get her other birds right they are very social
and chicken feed :frow
I understand. This is the first time she has done this. I have chicken starter but she also eats greens and tortillas and whatever else is around. She follows me and my dog. We play with her and she plays with us. She is never left alone unless she goes into bed at night. But because of the distress she is in she will be in bed with me. She's most comfortable on my shoulder. It's here she sleeps sometimes and also is where she gets warm. I did visit a farmers store and got advise on what is needed to feed her and keep her in healthy shape. That's where I got the feed and probiotic packets.
Sorry I'm all over the place.

Hi Terrie! Im sure she will be fine. If she pecks you when you pick here up, she probably is just afraid. So give her time and the more you hangout with her, and the more yo handle her... she will become bonded. When my chickens were little, I always held them because when they are older... they won't be afraid of you and run away. Also, where are you keeping her?

We have had her since she was very little. She doesn't go anywhere but with me my mom or my daughter. I made her a house with a heating pad and hay that I frequently change. She has gone to bed in it since we got her. I didn't know what else to do. She likes it. There is food and water in small containers that are attached to the side so she can't spill them. I call her by name and she comes. She learned that from my Chihuahua. Any time she is left alone she calls to me so I can call to her and she can find me. She's not out of my sight for more than 20 seconds at a time. And as u can see in both photos she is used to us handling her. She is already feeling better. Moving around and more active. Her chirping has changed pitch as if to say she's feeling a little more comfortable. I also keep trying to massage her crop to help her with the food in it. Thank u so much for replying. I really appreciate it.

Welcome to BYC. I'd go back to the feed store and get some chick grit for your little chick. They need that to be able to grind up anything they are eating except their starter. If they don't have it they can get crop issues. She is too young to be eating tortillas and whole corn. She sure is a cutie and so is your little girl. Bless you for taking her in and loving her.

Hello, Terrie, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
As @DiYMama540 mentioned, you need to offer her some chick grit.
There are people who keep house chickens but the chickens are flock animals and much prefer to be with other chickens. Do you plan to build her a secure coop and run outside and get her some friends?
