Hi I’m looking to buy brahma chicks, blue and black partridge at $30 a chick. Her chicken are beautiful! definitely breeder quality, is $30 too much to pay per chick? I was thinking of getting 5 black and 5 blue . If that’s too much then where can I buy good breeder quality hatching eggs or chicks?

I would say that if they are sexed, that price is reasonable. For straight run they should be cheaper

They are straight run.. her chickens are beautiful but I don’t have an eye quality chickens, I can tell between breeder and hatchery chickens and that’s about it. I’ve havnt even started reading about the SOP. I am working towards getting Quality chicken and working towards SOP breeding. shes from bramahs and beauty and she’s so nice, nicest breeder I have ever met, she took the time out to type out so much information about breeding for me which I really appreciated.

I would start with reading up on breeding to SOP ( a really good starter book is Start Where You Are With What You Have by Ralph Sturgeon it can be purchased on the American Bantam Association website), join the Brahma breed club and learn all you can about the breed and breeding for SOP and showing, go to local poultry shows this summer look at the Brahma and talk to breeders. This way you are sure before you make such a big purchase. I remember a poultry breeder recommending that people new to breeding should start out with a few lower quality birds first and learn what it takes to get an eye for disqualifications, defects, comparing to SOP, the documentation of tracking breeders and their off spring and how to move the lines forward. I am learning it takes a lot of coop to do it right, a lot of extra work to clean multiple breeding pens, care for all the chicks, not to mention all the cost in caring for those chicks to maturity. From what I understand Brahma are a big bird that eat a lot and are not mature until about 18 months old.

It's a very uncommon color, which alone is going to raise the price, whether they're sexed or not.

Personally I wouldn't get them, but that's just because they aren't my cup of tea. Doesn't sound too unreasonable though to me either way

They definitely are better quality than what you get from a hatchery and very pretty colors. If it’s the color and breed you want I would say go for it.

Are you able to pick them up in person or have them shipped? If you're picking them up, I'd be more inclined to pay. I had $25 chicks shipped to me last year and all arrived dead. The breeder replaced them free of charge for me, but I'm not sure every breeder is willing to do that.

It’s local pick up straight run. That’s the most I’ve ever paid for chicks. I’ll be buying ten chicks from her so I hope it goes well..
