I have sooooo many questions...but I found you guys because I am new to chickens and I don't know why only 2 of my reds are laying???
I have had guineas for many years and they stop laying in September. So I got into chickens...( NOW I AM HOOKED! I just love my reds...they are so friendly - unlike guineas....They even let me hug them!!! I am suposed to have 8 girls - but only 2 are laying. What am I doing wrong???? And thats how I found this you guys. Help please. Thank You,

How old are your girls? Are they all girls? Chooks USSUALLY start lay around 5 moths old. My Rhoad island red took almost a year.
When you say "Red" what breen do you mean?

If you live in the Northern hemisphere the lack of eggs could be because of the shortening day lengths. Most hens need 14 hours of light per day to keep them in production.

To answer chicken mans questioms. I bought 8 (sexed)day old females from Agway. The only thing I know about them is they are reds. 2 of them are laying right now. They are 5 months old.

Eglite..I live in the poconos - the tri - state area of Pennslyvania.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes! I will very slowly learn my way around this chicken yard...:)
