I think I may keep the pullet, I looked at her today and she has all the standards I read, she does have feathered legs, I just never really gave the poor bird that much notice..LOL her toe spacing is great, and granted she doesn't have much of a crest on her head, I'm taking into account its because she is still under a year old..
depending on how long it takes for the crest to get big and etc.
the roo on the other hand, i'm selling him because he does have too many faults and I don't think it will do me any good cross -breeding him with her.. he doesn't have the turquoise ear lobes..those are actually white.. he is a little more red then mulberry in the face.. he doesn't have much of a crest either..and again he is under a year.but from what I looked at for him, it doesn't look like its coming in thick either..
so I'll sell him and buy a new roo for my pullet.. she is un-bearded..so if bred to a bearded bird.. will I get 50/50 bearded and non-bearded chicks.. and how can I tell at a young age who will be bearded and who won't be..
thanks again for all the help so far guys.
How old exactly is she? If she is of laying age, her crest isn't going to get much better. The only way it would, is if the roo has pulled feathers while he is mating her.
As for bearded/non bearded, you can tell as soon as they hatch if they have a beard. At least I can with mine.
You say you never noticed if she has feathered legs before today. Well, that tells me that they are not feathered like they should be. You would never be able to miss a Silkie with feathered legs and feet, if they were. Feathers should cover the legs and go all the way down to the ends of the toes, from the middle toe to the outer toes.
