Hi! New member

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
The way I chose was to define my needs (cold hardy, good layers, non-aggressive, physically appealing to me) then look at the breeds that match.
Using the breed selector tools on the hatchery websites helped me zero in on the breeds in my first flock.
I currently have 11 birds comprised of 10 breeds.
If you have space on your property and no restrictions, chicken math is inevitable. Last weekend I placed an order for 16 more chicks comprised of 8 more breeds.

Greetings Halfpasthen, Welcome to BYC! :frow

Welcome! Glad you decided to join! Great that you are thinking ahead, have time to do a bit of research. Many things factor into choosing breed(s). I’ve always had a mixed flock, soooo many great chickens . Some key points for me were:
- location, we get hot summers and harsh winters
- hardy breeds
- egg colors
- preference for heritage breeds
- start with young chicks or adults
- full size vs bantam
- friendly, non flighty breeds

Your wants/needs may be much different but having some idea of what was important to me helped narrow my selection. I’m sure you’re going to get a lot of info and advice here :wee
