Hi there!

This is my first time raising chickens by myself. When I was a kid my grandma had chickens but haven' t been near them in over 20 years :D I currently have 6 in the flock: 2 Silver laced Wyndottes, 2 production Reds, and 2 Barred Rocks, They are about 7 weeks old and outgrowing their brooder! I have to get snapping on the coop!

I heard about BackyardChickens.com from my local permaculture group. I figured chickens would be a good fit for the large garden/orchard that I have and plan on giving them plenty of ranging area. The animal family is now 4 bunnies, 3 cats, and 6 chickens! Right now I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping for all pullets - No roos allowed in the city.

Welcome to BYC!

Yes, I would imagine your chicks are going to be bursting out of their brooder soon! Good luck with the coop build and welcome to our flock!

In your climate they could have been outside weeks ago. Do be sure your coop of whatever design has plenty of ventilation? Also you will want plenty of shade - natural or manufactured. Water misters are good for cooling them off, also gallon water jugs allowed to freeze , then set out near the chickens. Chave the water frequently and put ice in it as well. Chickens tolerate cold much better than extreme heat.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome and suggestions/advice. I'll keep everyone appraised on how the coop building goes. Right now I have it located under a tree, and have an irrigation port dedicated to providing water to misters for the run. Working on the feed and watering systems over the Memorial Day weekend. We'll see how that goes
