Does anyone use hi-tensile fencing for free-ranging chickens? We want to use this type of fencing in order to keep our livestock guardian dogs inside the chicken area. Will it also deter the chickens from walking through the fence?

48" tall 4- or 5-wire hi-tensile fence, wires 8-10" apart, with the two lowest ones closer. Electrify one low strand.

The hi-tensile fencing would enclose about an acre. Some chickens will be free ranging and others will be in a pen of around 2,000' sq.

We know this fencing will not prevent chickens from flying over the fence. We've been using 48" field fencing with 3"x6" mesh for the adult bird pens, with poultry wire around the lower part of the chick pen. Most of our chickens don't even know they could fly. The dogs patrol the perimeter constantly and we have never seen evidence of wild animals inside our fences so this fence will not be designed to keep predators out.

Any thoughts?

We have it for our goats. When our chickens free range, they pass right through the fencing. Very rarely do they get shocked. Our strands at the bottom are 3 inches apart.
