We have 12 chicks 2-4/5 weeks old, plus a dozen ducks, 2 rabbits, 2 horses, 2 dogs, lots of farm cats, 3 Guinea pigs, and 2 kids on a 42 acre farm.

The chicks we got are what brought me here. We had chicks when I was a teen. Let’s not discuss how long ago that was haha. I have 4 silkies, 3 bantams (1 is a roo for sure), and 5 Polish. Here’s the chick that I love...Bed-head. Any guesses of a gender?

Silkies and Polish are among the most difficult breeds to sex young. I believe the thing to watch in Polish is their crests. Generally, females will have a nicely round bouffant crest, while males will have streamers shooting out like a rock star.

Silkies are best sexed at 4-5 mos. of age, and sometimes not till they crow or lay eggs.

You can post photos at "what breed or gender is this," to have them sorted out. But early guesses may not be as accurate, as they would be at an older age.

You can also check out the breed threads for "Silkies, and Polish" to learn more about them.

Welcome to Backyard chickens.
