If you buy sex links you will get the females you want - sex is determined at birth by their feather color. There are red sex links, black, etc. They are very good layers for maye two years and then gradually burn out. Or you could buy any breed at "point of lay," to know they are positively females.

Some places sell baby chicks as males or females but, there are plenty of goof ups there too. Straight run is the way to get the most males - not worth the cheaper price unless you plain to eat them.
