We run an animal rescue and recently started getting chickens "donated" to us for various reasons. We've also bought a few that meet our ethics standards. We have a good relationship with the feedstore who gives us sick chickens for free (we quarantine them obviously). Only about 1 in 3 survives, but its better than dying in a cramped cage.

We are on the veg*n spectrum so ethics in sourcing animal byproducts is important to us. As one element of that, about half our flock is male. We don't have any aggressive roos so all are living in harmony currently.

We mix our own whole grain, organic feed, about 18% protein, and supplement with a variety of water and feed enhancers.

6 Cream Crested Legbars (4m, 2f, purchased)
5 Blue Laced Red Wyandottes (sex unknown yet, purchased)
5 mixed breed banties (1m, 4f, 3 unknown, donated)
6 keets (sex unknown yet, purchased)
2 rouen-mix ducks (1m, 1f we think, purchased)
2 button quail (1m, 1f we were told but no eggs yet..., rescued)
1 cinnamon queen hen, purchased
1 plymouth barred hen, purchased
1 random mixed rooster, purchased
1 New Hampshire chick (sex unknown, rescued)
1 Cochin (sex unknown, rescued)

Only four hens are of laying age. Legbars should be laying soon (born in March).

They are currently housed in four different temporarily coops while we finish work converting a 18x21 garage into a working coop. We're looking at different designs to see how to best maximize the vertical space in the detached garage.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! What a lovely job you are doing there by rescuing these chickens. That's certainly a lovely mixed flock you have there. Good luck in converting your garage into a working coop. You might like to drop by the coop section, I'm sure there are lots members who will be able to help with your plans. Wishing you the very best of luck with your flock and plans in the future.
Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

How wonderful that you run an animal shelter! And congratulations on rescuing the chickens! Sounds like you've gotten a wide variety of breeds donated to you. Good luck with them all as well as with the rest of your animals. I hope the plans for the garage work out smoothly. Feel free to ask any questions along the way! Definitely check out the link provided above.

Glad you joined this amazing community!

We purchased a few to avoid them going to bad situations. Others we added for egg production. Those eggs help offset the cost of running the animal rescue work we do (we make a lot of their food at home for sourcing and nutrition issues). Guinea fowl were purchased to help maintain the snake and tick population.
