Hi y'all. My name is Joel, and my wife and I live just outside Austin. We have a 21 month old daughter, as well as two retired greyhounds.
A few months ago, a good friend said she was moving and couldn't take her chickens with her. She gave us three of her favorites and we promptly gave them cute names... Beatrice (formerly Big Mama), Gertrude, and Eunice. Since then, we've also brought home two other gals, Theadora (Thea) and Agnes.
Their current coop is a bit crowded, so we are planning to build a new coop within the next month, ready to hold (hopefully) up to 8 hens. (UPDATE: We're basing the coop off of this design. I've already put together a SketchUp file for it. Over the coming days, I'll post that, too.)
Aside from raising chickens, I enjoy woodworking... which should help out quite a bit with the coop.
In my time away from the house, I enjoy cycling, running, triathlons, and chasing our daughter around!
Thanks in advance for welcoming me (and my family) to the board. I'm looking forward to getting lots of information and help here!
