Hi

also, (if possible) can anyone post a pic of their coop? I would like some ideas

There's a thread linked under my avatar with pics .....

As I said above, I kinda need some parameters ....... form should be based upon function...... what does it need to do? What do you want it to look like? What is your budget? What is your carpentry skill level? What tools do have or have access to? Where are you at? Lots of questions, but when confronted with such, start with "What do I WANT?", followed by "What do I NEED to make that happen?"

The answer to the second question is so dependent upon the answer to the first that the second can't even be considered until the first is answered.

ya, I guess I meant "good enough" when I said "perfect."well, I am looking for a coop that can fit up to six easter egger chickens. I have a large, secure run (was used for a dog run apparently) and I was thinking of putting the coop inside the run, so safety in the coop is not soooooo important. I am hoping to get the EE's soon, but I will have to talk about zoning laws to the city council first. and as a preference, I would like something pretty

(just a preference though!)

Now we have some answers.

First, get zoning/ordinance questions resolved. There are ample resources here and elsewhere on the net on getting this done ..... they boil down to getting your neighbors on your side and providing the proper local govenrment entity with a cut and paste solution that allows you to keep chickens and them some preplanned recourse if there is a complaint ...... if you are in a small (American) town, these people are not paid (or paid enough to compensate them fairly for their time) , and have bigger concerns taxing their (likely volunteered) time ...... DO THEIR WORK FOR THEM, but to your liking..... it's highly likely that there are "backyard chicken" ordinances in places near you that can be copied .... this is what my then 4th grader did a couple years ago when she went before our village board...... she asked the question "Why can't I have pet chickens?" and followed with "kids in A,B,C, D, E, F-town (all local towns, some larger, some smaller) had chickens" .... and then provided a handout with the laws of towns A,B,C, D,E, and F ..... and the law for our village as she wanted it......

.... Slam Dunk, by a ~4 foot tall 4th grader.

I can maybe afford around up to $300?
I spent about $350 on mine, but 90% of that was at a smalltown local hardware store where things are pretty pricey compared to Home Depot/Lowe's/Menards .... IF I had planned better, and made a materials list, and bought just that, instead of designing it as I went along, with the multiple trips to the local store ..... yeah .....
...... and I had no clue about the 70% off bin....... Live and Learn .....

but if you did it all by your by your ownself, it would be money well NOT spent: SKILLS ar the most valuable thing.

Quote: For now, we have as a given:

You want 6 chickens (EE's) .... and have a dog run of undetermined size ....... and want "pretty".

....

Given that conventional wisdom numbers here on on BYC are 4sq ft./bird for the coop, 10 sq. ft./bird for the run and 1 sq. ft./ bird for ventilation ..... 6 EE's need 24 sq. ft. of unobstructed floor space in the coop, 60 for the run, and 6 square feet of openings t the outide, preferably up high ..... and add in one nest box/4 birds ......
