We are not new to chickens nor to backyard chickens, but it seems we cannot find our old account.
So, hi again! We have had a few backyard chickens here in suburbia OC in So. Cal. for 11 years. It started with a chick-hatching science activity when my girls were in 1st and 3rd grade. After the hatching process, there was no turning back to keeping them.
We have had a variety of breeds - Rhode Island Reds, Golden Laced Windots, Plymouth Barred Rocks, and Orpingtons. We also had a beautiful Americauna who died as a chick because she didn't have a match (don't get chicks in 3s!!).
We currently have 2 Orpington Buffs, Jane and Harriet. Their names come from the 2 favorite Jane Austin novels Pride and Prejudice and Emma. (Hence our user name, "Austin Girls" ;) ) We originally had 4 in this recent batch, but Lizzie and Emma unfortunately died within the first year of unknown causes.
What we enjoy most about having chickens is the fun of seeing them lay eggs, and the hours of "chicken therapy" spent just watching them do dust baths, scratch, preen, and generally be "chicken-y".
We have other hobbies, including dogs, music, hiking, biking, and playing games/reading books aloud with family.
We have appreciated stalking BYC for questions and needs of our girls over the years.
