well Ive gone and done it..... become a chicken addict and I dont even have any yet LOL Im driving my husband crazy so I figured I needed to stop lurking on here and introduce myself.

Im looking into getting a small flock of no more than ten this spring (can only have ten due to city code) and after reading so much info my head is spinning

I need some experienced opinions.. I have a small house on a standard city lot and Im concerned about getting regular sized chickens, i just cant imagine 6 8 pound chickens running around in my yard.. should I get bantams instead?? I want them friendly and for eggs, would 10 bantams be better than 3-6 standards like RIR and Easter Eggers?? plus those silkies are soooo cute:)

thanks Lauren

from UT! Glad you joined us! As for getting regular versus bantams, I think it's up to you. You could also get medium sized breeds (4-6 pounds). That what we have and I really don't think they are that big. I know that Meyer Hatchery has EE bantams - you could have the best of both worlds! Good luck!

I'm not super experienced -just have a flock of three that I started last June. And I don't have any bantams so other than having heard that Silkies are more like kittens than birds, I don't know much about bantam temperaments.

You'll get a lot of great advice here, though. Mine would be to think through and research, plan for/design your coop and whatever enclosure you're going to provide your flock, taking into consideration any predator issues (this includes neighborhood dogs) and then decide on your flock.

Good luck!
