I grew up on a farm in south Georgia and have had chickens since the mid 1980s except for several years after a babcat killed 13 one night and 15 a couple of nights later. I have about 75 right now, mostly Black Australorps and Rhode Island Reds, that are in a chain link horse corral with wire across the top and a secure coop. We are getting ready to harvest about 20 young roosters that I hatched out this summer and some hens that are not as productive as I want or have certain genetics that I am weeding out of the flock. I am working on starting a local poultry club, Hi Desert Homegrown Poultry Association, in January at a local rural community center, Yucca Mesa Improvement Association, in the Yucca Valley area just north of Palm Springs.
