Hello All,

I am expecting 18 new chicks at the beginning of March, and I want to make sure there is as few infectious organisms both in their incubators (in my basement) as well as in the coop that has 3 older pullets (for when they go outside in a few months). I know Mereks is in my flock - so all the newbies are vaccinated, but I still want to play it safe. I will also be giving them medicated feed.

I was surprised that there wasn't a kind of go-to disinfectant for poultry - most of the ones I found ship from Europe! Does anyone have a tried and true solution that they trust for that yearly cleaning (or pre-new peep cleaning)? Any help would be great - Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions! What kind of dilution do you need to make for something like bleach and oxine? Should it kill everything (viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites)? I want to make sure it is safe for my chickens.

The directions for the Oxine are on the bottle.
It is safe for your birds and kills all kinds of nasty stuff.
Some folks put it in a vaporizer and mist the coop while the birds are in at night-I haven't done that yet, but I haven't heard of it causing any problems.
I'm not sure on the bleach mixture.
Here's a link on Oxine.

I use Basic H...

I grew up with it and I know it's safe and effective, so that's why I use that for the incubator

If you want the Best and kill everything you listed then I would recommend 1-Stroke Environ or Tektrol. The list of what it kills is a novel and leaves things smelling like a hospital. The are labeled for poultry operations. I use it to disinfect the barn before calving and it works great!!

I use nolvason. We use it for every cage/viv/pen in the rescue. I buy it by the gallon and dilute it according to the directions. Its used as a skin cleanser for surgery, a disinfectant, a cleaner....we even use it to rinse mouth injuries on other critters.
