Hmmm...Chick breed and gender?

that's interesting. I didn't know that chickens carry certain traits to their parents! thanks for that info. I know my roo we hatched over winter is a mix. EE dad and splash maran mom. thanks for all your help! i trying to pinpoint as well!

well if the mom or dad are also mixed then that fact tells us nothing because then you have to look for 4 different breeds to manifest possibly. But generation to generation you usually get chickens with mom's shape and dad's coloring but if dad had a black mother and orange father then the chick's he throws could end up being black or orange or both, you see what I'm saying. The first time I hatched eggs I bought 2 dozen out of a guys laying flock that he kept one black copper marans and one blue copper marans rooster over the hens... All different hens though, Orpingtons, wyandottes, all kinds of hens, and I was thinking that I would have all kinds of different looking chickens...but no I had all black and blue chickens of all kinds of shapes and that is when I googled and found the dad gives color mom gives shape thing. I saw it to be true. I had all shapes of chickens with the same blue and orange or black and orange coloring. But these were all purebred chickens. If you are mixing mutts with mutts you can end up with anything. And I like that the best. It gives surprises and variety. Right now I'm hatching mixed chick's from my own flock. And I was afraid they would all be orange, and mostly they are, but they all have patterns. So that's good. I wasn't looking forward to a yard full of plain orange chickens. Now I'll have a yard full of patterned orange chickens. Lol. And I don't really know what rooster fathered which chicks. Other than the ones coming up really orange. And their size is somewhat an indicator. But 2 of my hens are mixed so that opens me up to even more possibilities. Anyway here I am yakking again with no real purpose. Lol
