Hoarding/hiding rare and threatened breeds - Why?

I agree with you.

Oh, yes! There are MANY breeders like that on BYC,.. that i know for sure, the good ones ...
but still there are the others, we cant deny that...
Either way, it doesnt really concern me.. as i'm not a breeder. And i'm the type of person that if i want a certain "breed" badly enough, i'll just fork over the moolah anyways..

Like tomorrow, going to spend $300 on a turtle..

You did NOT mess it up. Made perfect sense to me. Thanks

I think all of the answers have merit and they broadened my view on this. Thanks all.

Well maybe not the cow thing:lol:

Even in a lie, there is generally a truth.

"Chicken Milk" is a real product, mainly found in SOME baby formulas.

It is however, not from a hen with utters like a cow. No little milk stool.
Now I ask you, would a Spook lie?

They are hiding? What do you expect them to do? Send you an email? Have you looked in the Poultry Press? Or do you expect everyone to announce their birds on BYC? I have never seen anyone "hiding" their birds. Maybe not allowing the public onto their property for biosecurity reasons, which is not the same as hiding their birds.

Lots of people have chickens and don't make public announcements. You probably don't know what breeds most of the people who read at BYC have, but that's not because they are hiding their chickens. But since you know about the breeds, somebody is talking about them.

If you want to own rare chickens, spend the money to buy some and then you can take out and pay for huge ads so you aren't hiding them, and sell them all over the place if you think that is what should be done with them. Put an ad in the wanted to buy section that you want them. Look at the ads in the Poultry Press. Shop at Egg Bid. If you want them and they are in this country and you've got the money, you can own some, too. In fact, even if they are not yet in this country, if you've got the money, you can own some, too.

Just in case you don't know. Very few serious poultry breeders will check in at BYC, so you might have to shop elsewhere.

I would agree. And some of them have no intentions of selling birds only showing them off. I will not deal with them, I have found what I am looking for from auctions and the fine folks that attend them. Some great breeders I know use them for dumping grounds.
