Finally have a house, and I expect to be here for another 10 years give or take, so I've got a bucket list of things I want to do with my big (six tenths of an acre) yard. I'm pretty handy and already have a bunch of tools.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Totally new. My mom grew up on a farm and they had chickens, that's about as close as I've gotten!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Zero. Still trying to figure out if I'm going to attempt them this year or wait until next; got a lot of house projects going on right now.
(3) What breeds do you have?
My housemate is interested in Silkies, but is generally clueless with animals (he's never had house pets before we bought a house together). So in order to get his interest, at least some of the chickens we eventually have will be Silkies. edited to add: Looks like they're not the most heat-tolerant of breeds, so that's kind of up in the air.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Looking forward to a few fresh eggs, chicken poo fertilizer, hoping for some fire ant control, and am interested in learning to humanely kill and butcher them. I want to get straight-run chicks for ethical reasons.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I'm an avid gardener, and I read a lot of fiction.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
No kids, just kitties! First outdoor project after fixing a fence gate is to build a catio. I also want to try dwarf goats at some point.
