Hole in beak

rubbing on a wire fence would've caused line-like worn marks on the beaks. This is clearly a hole. I'm dumbfounded by this. I've never heard of a such a thing. I'm wondering if someone in your flock was pecking at them relentlessly??
I don't think so. The cockerel is in a pen with just one other cockerel. They hatched together and he is at the top. I keep watching to try to see if something is going on, but so nothing that might contribute to this problem.
The pullet is in a pen with bantams. They can't reach her face.
It's just the oddest thing.

Then maybe a virus or a parasite of some sort? Like a worm? I love that they hatched together.

I think you may be right about the parasite thing. I've been all over the web and I keep finding refference to mites causing similar symptoms. But, as someone else posted, a sinus infection can also cause this, so I have been hesitant to say more. If it were me, I would make sure the birds are dusted for mites and maybe put some Blu Kote on a Q Tip and apply it to the hole. It can't hurt and it may even help keep it from getting worse.

Any update on the disposition of the case of the pullet with the hole/sore on her beak? I've found that 3 of my 5 chicks (8 weeks old) developed similar sores in the last 24 hours. I plan to put some Blue Kote on the wounds and maybe some VetRX in their water, but would really like to know what happened with your pullet last year.

Pics below. In the pic with 2 birds, the Wyandotte on the your left has just developed a small red sore this morning. The Black Star next to her has the white looking circular sore (it's really more like a gray circle with a blackish scab in the center). The second pic shows my Buff Orp with the same type of sore - red and open. Otherwise they're acting pretty normal, if maybe a bit low energy.

I was never able to pin point what had caused the holes, but they eventually healed. At least one of them had the black scab, as you described. I put antibiotic on the sores and also rubbed VetRX around their faces (just in case it was caused from a sinus infection). I actually only did that a couple of times. Their beaks are healthy and restored now.
Hopefully, you will have the same results with your chicks! Good luck!

I just noticed this in my 8mo BLR roo that I've had for 2 months now. About 2 weeks ago I brought in another roo and they ended up fence fighting and scraped their combs in the plastic deer fence between pens. Now that his comb has pretty much healed I noticed a lighter colored spot at the very front of his comb and upon inspection find a hole. Thought that part of his comb was scraped off that once covered it but it really looks like the comb was not damaged there at all.
