Hello everyone!!! So the last few weeks we’ve been having broken egg issues in the nesting boxes. I figured one of our new layers was pecking and chalked it up to that. But today my son brings this egg in and said Mom I think this is the problem. We have 6 older layers. Like this will be their 4th spring with us and 6 first timers. Is this prone to older hens?? Or what causes?? Any info appreciated as always.

Thats crazy! I don't know but if i had to guess id say it is a result of either poor diet (lack of calcium), age of the hen, or damage occurring when the egg "dropped" in the box or post lay damage from pecking.
Maybe someone else can say for sure.

I've never seen a perfect hole in an egg like that. It's not caused from being dropped into a hard box, not from pecking either. I'd say it's an internal development issue. I'd give 24% chick food to supplement, be sure there is plenty of oyster shell on the side. If it's one of the older hen's reproductive systems, there isn't much you can do. I'd check for eggs many times per day if you can as well. :hugs

a perfect hole like that must have been formed inside, I've never seen something like that from pecking or predators.
That'd be my best guess too.
I'd guess that it's an older layer coming back into lay after winter break,
wonky shell gland hopefully just a start up glitch.
Do you know which bird laid that egg?
Might be able to see the 'weakness pattern' in their other egg shells.
