Our third hen started laying about three days ago. Her last two eggs have had holes in them like this. We check frequently for eggs and are not exactly sure why this is happening or what we can do to prevent it. Our other eggs have been fine. Any help?

New pullets' eggs are often mis-shaped or mis-formed. It's very normal. They might be lacking calcium to complete the eggshells. (Or the shells are so thin that they break as soon as they are laid.) Either way, make sure they have either oyster shell or crushed, rinsed eggshells to eat. Also, make sure they nests are comfy and have lots of soft bedding.

I was also getting little holes like that.

I had two instances in two days. Then yesterday half of the egg was destroyed. I thought they were laying them in the hard surface and that was causing it, but unfortunately it looks like it is the hen pecking it.

I suspect that is what is going on with yours also.

Maybe someone will have suggestions on how to stop it from happening.
