No, really, it sounds like you have a piece of heaven over there! I told my hubby that I missed my true calling, after hatching eggs and all the other gardening stuff I've been doing this year I realized that I've been called to be on a farm. I don't think he bought it. But someday he's gonna wake up and smell the chickens, then maybe we can head for the country.

Sweet, sweet, sweet... Love the feather duster idea, wish I'd heard about it sooner. Do you have any pic of it? I don't think they're gonna be in the aquarium for very long, I read on "raising chickens 101" that Pine shavings work really well. I picked some up at Walmart for about $5. I've read about lots of folks who use sand in the chicken runs for the older birds though. I don't really know... I guess I'm not much help here.

I want cute baby goats!

About the water bowl--I had big river rock gravel on the sides of my sidewalk, so I washed them and used those for the water dish....so far so good!

evonne- I love your brooder! That's very creative!

The Pictures are so cute!! Is it ok to update weekly here with pictures? I was thinking I'd take a picture every Saturday and post them probably on Monday to watch them grow...

Also, when do you think it'll be ok to put the other chickens back in the coop with mom and babies?? They are all hanging around the coop wondering what those babies are doing, including daddy, he was peeking in yesterday...they are free-range chickens but they have forgotten where to lay their eggs (I'm still looking for them) and I have to lock them in there for a few days to retrain them...

Thank you!!

Ok, second (last) egg hatched for us late last night. Here is the first chick being adventurous and the both chicks together.

I don't use pine shavings in the brooder, since the oils are supposed to be bad for the chicks. I do use aspen shavings, but for the first couple of weeks I lay a puppy pad over the shavings. Keeps the chicks from eating them, is more durable that paper towels, and easy to change once or twice a day.

My Halloween chicks really moved slowly. The last 2 d'Uccles are drying off in the bator, and I have 7 Silkies & 1 d'Uccle in the brooder. I thought the others had given up, and was about to take them out when they 'yelled' at me. So I put them back and upped the humidity again.

Even with the Broody still in with them you just use paper towels? We are keeping them with "mom" outside so didn't want them on a cold floor with just paper towels.

The ones with mom are in aspen shavings.
The ones in brooder boxes are on puppy pads.
I have 3 different ages of chicks right now, so I can't put everyone under the hen!
