HOLIDAY HATCH PARTY... chicks anyone... the party continues....

I had one sorta like that. I really didn't think he would make it. He was rolling around on his back, and when I would stand him up, he was unsteady. It was like the yolk made his belly so big, he couldn't balance himself. I just left him in the bator, with the lid propped open an inch. Like you, when I checked in the morning, I thought I would have a dead baby. He made it, and is now with the others. Amazing, isn't it!

Well I did it, ordered 25 Jersey Giant (BL) due to arrive Sat 11/6. So much to do to prepare..sterilize brooder, get the waterer and feeder cleaned up, redo top of brooder, check the heaters and lights, good thing I have help from dau and her friend. Will post pics and updates. Wish me and the chickies luck!

One of my BR chicks tore itself open from pulling the umbilical too hard. I had to intervene when the other hatched chicks started pecking at it. I put a band aid over it's sore and put it back in the bator. I thought for sure it would die. Next morning, it was still alive and I moved all of them to the brooder. I kept the area clean and changed band aids as necessary. Again I thought it would be dead the next day. Again the chick surprised me. It had some pasty butt and while I was cleaning it up, I noticed a lot of fluid buildup around the hurt area. I thought for sure this meant infection and it would die.

It's now been 1 1/2 weeks and the little bugger is doing fine. I was really hoping it would be a pullet since I worked so hard to save it, but from the wing feathers coming in, I think it's a cockeral.

It always works out that way for me, too.

My first clue for that is usually: Does the chick really like me? Follow me around? Peep for me to come get it should it get lost? Let me pick it up well past the time when it's siblings are aloof? Well then, time to get the blue party favors because it's a boy.

pppfftttt yeah.. good luck with that...

well i guess if you stay busy with duck eggs.....
oh by the way, i'm getting duck eggs from the designer egg train... lol.. oops.... i musta accidentally on purpose typed in taken and put up more eggs...

Designer Egg Train? What's that?

Buffy's pullet eggs...I was looking at them in the turners the other day and I noticed that they were very close in size to the bantam eggs. I took one out of the fridge and compared it to a store Large egg (bought because I wanted to make brownies and incubate chicks, proof that you can have your cake and chickens too). No wonder I was having problems with these babies, especially when you consider the humidity problems.

Anyway, between hers and the bantams I hatched, we have 24 chicks (or 22, I don't remember whether I kept the ones I gave away in the count). I'll need to do a count to figure out how many of each, but they are squirmy little imps.
