HOLIDAY HATCH PARTY... chicks anyone... the party continues....

Is it normal? I have been hatching for the last three weeks straight and...

I was in the kitchen earlier, cooking dinner, and I stood near the now cold and empty third incubator. I wanted to check for the eggs and look for pips. I kept listening for the quiet little tell-tale peeps. And, what's worse? I think this happened before.

Well...I can't say I like the smell of really dirty chicken cages, but I find something nice about ripe goats, which people think is odd. It has to do with using cans of Meyenberg dried goat milk for cooking when I was in college. It has a less potent affect on me than the smell of warm chocolate chip cookies or cinnamon, but it's up there and most people can't stand it. I also love the smell of our hay. It's almost candy scented to me and makes the brooders and the rooms they are in smell nice, though I try to keep them as clean as I can.

The hatching thing is probably not so much an addiction, though, as it is the same sort of feeling that I used to get when school would let out for the summer. I'd feel like there was something I just had to get done, except there was nothing. In the last three weeks, it's been all about work, chores, and make sure they can hatch!

nuh uh.. one day it was about BBQ!!!
lol

ssooo i'm excited, a guy i've been talking with that i met here on BYC, he lives in AZ but is finishing out his Dr's school here, we were discussing egg colors and hte fact that neither of us knew how it was determined.. he looked it up... the genes come from both parents, and blue is dominat... so when these chicks.. if any of them are girls.. lol.. start laying, i should have a better idea what color my Roo is putting in...
but it also let me realize that if i get a dark egger roo and put him with my lucy who's already laying almost olive eggs, i'll get an awsome olive egger from that pairing... i NEED a dark brown egger....

oohhhh did i tell you guys 1 maybe 2 of my little ones are getting their daddy's dark leggs coming in....

And the day of the barbeque, a chick hatched.

That is cool about the egg color. Blue is dominant to white or brown? Or both? I have a weird interest, since I have a LOT of brown and light brown egg type standard roosters and no standard EE roo unless you consider Raven's watered down EE heritage that only shows a bit under the Australorp.

I might get the bantams step ladders.

I am glad to report mah bebbies are happy, healthy, and growing scary-fast...! Two are especially happy to see me, come running and chirp for me, etc, but they ALL always run under their feather duster when I reach into the brooder. Please tell me I'm not doomed with 9 roos...!

I was at work on Monday and I could've have sworn I heard teeny peeping... I feel ya.

Hey, guys, I had an idea... I saw a page, somewhere on here, I think, of daily pics of a pullet from hatch to, like, six months old or eight months old ((as she got older the pics were spaced out to days, and then weekly, I think. I saw it a while ago and haven't found it again.) Since Seramas can change so much from chickhood to adulthood, I thought I would try that with a couple of mine. Whatcha all think?

BTW, here's a piccie of my firstborn. Her wee wings are coming in so cool - chocolate over white-white. (

i vote you do it with that one... she's my favorite...

I would love to, but by the time it occurred to me I had already she was already a couple of days old and I missed my chance to do profile shots from day one. I could start her series, but it'll have to start with her six days old pic, instead of one day old. LOL I've already taken the first shots of my other candidates, and while I was saving them to the comp I though, hey, maybe BYC would like to follow their progress, too.
