HOLIDAY HATCH PARTY... chicks anyone... the party continues....

I think he has to be a Sizzle. He's got the Frizzled feathers and silkie feet. He looked pitiful as a chick, with thin fuzz and that black skin showing through. Right now, I'd love to wash him.

When he's clean he looks a lot better.

Now the eggs I have in at the moment are blue silkies...

hhmmmm too bad it will be 6 months before you get any eggs from them... lol... if you get an unwanted roo and feel the need to take a trip to vegas.... lol....

Maybe I can scan and email? Fax? It would have been easier when we lived in Dallas to make the trip, but we didn't have chickens in Dallas.

I need to figure out what gender Gonzo and Kermit are, too. Kermit is "Sir Not Appearing In These Photos." He kept hiding behind the Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rock x EEs, black cochin and the two Orpingtons. I have one photo that shows a bit of Kermit feathers peaking out but that's it. He's a very dark grey that is almost black and frizzled like Gonzo, but he's missing the hairdo.

Nef - Cute pics! Gonzo... OMG, he's cool! But, but, where is Murphy??

Sue -

for your little chickie

Kathy - I've been thinking a lot about the calender idea. It sounds like it'd be so much fun..! Oh, congrats on the new Delawares and other assorted babies... the cuteness must be overwhelming!

I finally uploaded some new piccies of my little ones - over on my Serama thread in the Pics and Stories section. Oh, and I want to start my Growth of a Serama series - I think in its own thread, also in Pic and Stories.

Oh, for all HER (

) fans out there, here's a current pic of little... I dunno, any idea for a name? Everybody else has pretty much decided on their names, but not this one. Probably because I really, really want her to be a pullet but I keep getting little roo vibes...

Murphy will star in a photo tomorrow. I completely forgot on Saturday and today I was too worried about the double Murder Most Fowl that went on in our sun room. We are down to 10 EEs from Ideal and 1 Turken (out of 15 EEs and 2 Turken). Just when we thought we had them calmed down and no longer crushing each other, we got a rat. Actually, we had one for Halloween that murdered one of them when I had them in the chicken coop outside. It must have followed them.

We talked about the problem and made the decision to put the young EEs out in the goat barn. Better to have them out there with the three young roosters and the goats than to feed them to a rat.

Thanks Kathy

I want to see about getting more rat wire for more juvenile bird pens. We are going to need them soon and we are coming up on a bad time of year here. We have a creek on the property and are just a bit away from the river, so we get all the "river rats." The first year we were here, there were mice. It seemed like the rats came when we got quail the summer before last.

When I brought them up to the barn, I noticed one had a torn up wing also. I hope no one picks on her. The other Turken was killed also had been briefly in the pen with Gonzo and company. They took him for an injured bird and pecked him pretty badly. I'm hoping the big boys just ignore the little Turken. They are pretty sweet for roosters. Then there's always the possibility of goats stepping on them and then the possibility that once they free range they might not come back...I'm going to be worried Mommy hen for a while.

The little babies are all safely inside the house. We hired Max the Cat for rat and mouse patrol inside. I intend to put traps out in the sun porch and keep the doors shut.

my god nef... i'm sorry... it's been a tough few weeks for you... *hugs*

i've been a little busy with church stuff over the last 2 days, but thought i'd pop in real quick with an update on Gimpy.....
earlier he was gimping around the cage pretty quickly.. and still eating and drinking... well this evening he's more limping than gimping... i'm thinking he was just really really sore... or maybe a slight break, but it's healing already... i don't know for sure, but he's almost back to normal... i definitley think he's survivng the incident, and now i think he'll make a full recovery...

I'm so sorry for your lost chickies and rat troubles. I'll be sending good thoughts your way for the survivors!

evonne - Glad Gimpy is doing well - I love hearing about an 'iffy' chick doing better.
