Holy Cow -- I have sprouts!

I use that coupon too. My seeds from gurneys always do well.

LOL I don't know anything that tastes exactly like okra- I like it fried and pickled but not boiled. You'll probably either love it or hate it- I doubt you will be in the middle. Try some anyway - The blooms are pretty- Look kinda like hibiscus- In fact it may be related.

Oh and congrats on the sprouts!!!!!

This morning I found a ton of sprouts! I planted 72 cucumber seeds, all of which appear to be popping up, 36 pie pumpkins, most of which have popped up, 36 cantaloupe, all of which look to have sprung, 24 watermelon, which are only starting to work their way out, and 36 squash. The squash haven't popped out yet at all.

So I started a new tray tonight with the seeds from Gurneys that came in the mail yesterday. I planted 36 First Edition Hybrid Onions, 25 Athena Hybrid Cantaloupes, 18 Argonaut Squash, 12 Sangria Hybrid Watermelons and 15 Sweet Success Hybrid Cucumbers.

What? No tomatoes?

Have you thought about letting your cukes climb? I put mine in rows then put nylon netting between stakes and they climb right on up. Really good if you need to save space. You should have a TON of cukes and cantaloupes! Good luck! Let us know how they do!

Well, so trying to describe Okra sounds a little bit like trying to describe Heart of Palm. That's also love or hate, and unique in flavor.

Maybe I'll get some seeds and try them.

I might stick some tomatoes out there too, but my mom volunteered to grow them on her porch this year. If I do some I think I'll do them hydroponically and hang them from the overhang of my roof. We're in a ranch so we've got a long wall to utilize!

That's a great idea about letting the cucumbers climb! I'll have to rig something up for that in those rows.

Okra is definately hard to describe. It's also one of those things that you have to know how to cook or it can turn out bad.

The cantaloupes will climb too , but you have to make a kind of "sling" for them once the melons start getting big or else they'll fall off. The netting for cukes works really well though.

Well the idea of being able to roast Okra seeds to make into coffee beans is what intrigues me the most about them. It'd be kinda neat to try and make different blends, and then take little bags of beans to some local craft shows in the fall. I'd have to find a coffee drinker to try them out for me first though.

As per the cantaloupes, I think I'll just let them stay on the ground. I don't really want to have to try and sling up each of the melons. I mean, I do a lot of work, but there are some things I just won't have time for.

I never let my cantaloupes climb either but if it's really wet I do put a handful of straw under each melon. It seems to help keep ants and cutworms out of them.

Huh. That's another good tip. Are there any other fruits of veggies you'll do that for? Like watermelons?

Yeah you could do the water melons too. The way they lay on the ground makes them really prone to ants and cutworms. The straw is just enough to keep them a little drier I guess. I've always had good luck with it. I'm really interested in how your hanging tomatoes do. Keep us posted!

Will do!

Here's a quick pic of my cucumber sprouts.

Don't know why I find them so amazing, but I do. They came up the fastest of all the seeds I planted.

I'll take pictures of the tomatoes once I've got them outside hanging. It might take a few weeks though until I know all the snow is pretty much done with. There's a threat of it for next week still. Darned MI weather.
