It's been cold for a while here and I mean really cold. Usually 5 degrees give or take usually take from freezing when I take the kids to school. We've been lucky to reach 40 as a high for a week or so. Today it was a whopping 31 degrees. I always take my daughter in and say good morning to the teacher and the office staff. She's in the 5th grade. So here it is below freezing and I have to drive by the track on the way home and what do I see.... The middle school kids 6-8 grade kids running track, outside in the very cold. Half of them in shorts. I just think that is ridiculous. They have a gym that they can have PE in so I see no reason to have them running on the track in those temperatures. Had I known they did that when my kids went there I would have been chewing some butt.

OMG I just have to add that I just went out and fed my dogs. In the little time I was out there my poor fingers are just froze. Yeah I know I'm a bit of a baby in the cold. But having 11-13 year olds running in this cold is stupid.

Sorry,
Your concern about 31 degrees is hilarious to me. I think we need -60 wind chills before they close school. Know below -10 one could be concerned about damaging lungs without a scarf while running track but not at 31 F....... We xc ski and the kids play outside all the time in winter, heck we don't see temps above 31 for nearly 5 months out of the year..

Here if the temp gets above 90.. That is something to be concerned about! Heat exhaustion yikes!. One should do nothing but stay near icy cold lakes such as Lake Superior in those dangerous hot temps above 90 F...

I grew up in Southern California so for me 50 was cold when we moved out here to North Central Texas. lol I could never make it in your climate. Also one thing about running in the cold is the kids that have asthma will get thrown right into an asthma attack. That's how I found out my oldest had it and that was in about 45 degree weather. She is almost grown out of her asthma thankfully. My thing about freezing weather is outside should be optional. I wouldn't think about closing the school down but when there is a gym available it needs to be used. In fact on cold days like this the gym is where all the kids gather during the remainder of their lunch period. So why not have the other classes run laps around the basketball court.

I so agree, if it were 31 here the kids would be wearing shorts to school.....it would be considered a heat wave! -4 right now and the kids are on the play grould playing....no big deal!

31 degrees? That isn't even considered coat weather here! Besides, while running you get VERY VERY HOT. Coats while running would make people melt. I could see if they were walking, yes, slap a coat on, but running? Men here in Jesey run CONSTANTLY shirtless.

It is not as bad here as it is farther north but I would still love some temps around freezing. I think it is around 15 now with snow and wind. As far as running in shorts goes I would agree that one would over heat in a coat rather quickly and at least for me the legs are the last thing to get cold, heck I even shovel snow in shorts without a problem. No offense to the op, I guess it is what you are used to.

Hmmm, I think things are different down here in the South. There is so much humidity in the air, cold is colder, and hot is hotter. I think the term "Air you can wear came from the South. But I do know if it's 30 degrees here in Alabama I am bundled up like a stay puff marshmellow but if I go North only as far as Illinois and it's 30 degrees there, I don't have to wear a coat. It may be different across the country, but Illinois is as far North as I have ventured to this point in life.
But regardless, I am ready for warm weather. Green grass, flowers, vegetable gardens, and sitting on the porch watching my chickens for hours.

Yep...it'll all perspective, isn't it? One of my best friends married and moved down to Jacksonville about 5 years ago. She's "spoiled" now, and freezes to death when she comes home for visits in the winter time, even at mild temperature of 40 or so. Years ago when stationed down in Norfolk, Va., I remember laughing because the area literally shut down (including fast food places) with less than an inch of snow. It's all in what you're use to... I know I'd never make it in the really cold north...brrrrr.
