HOLY CRAP ITS COLD

Too Funny. To bad you didn't get that on tape.

We have had very cold temps the last few days. Yesterday we had -28F then it warmed up to 5F. This morning we had -31F and it never got over 0. I lost one of my hens yesterday. She was in the small run I made out of a hoop coop covered with plastic which is attached to the coop, there is a thick layer of straw on the ground for insulation. No matter how cold it gets they still like going out there. When the sun comes out it's like a mini green house. Monday is supposed to be even colder with a high of -15F. BRRRRRRR

It's not nearly as cold here in Michigan, but it's still pretty darn cold. I woke up to -19(f) degree weather today and it got up to 2(f) today. All next week the high is supposed to be single digits. Of course they don't factor in windchill... Tomorrow calls for a high 25(f) "supposedly" I might break out the shorts. Hehe

I have a large hutch attached to my coop.
Its tarped with straw for insulation on the ground. Even though my birds love going out in it every morning for their treat, (it also gives them more room to move round in), when it gets to -29 like it is this morning, they don`t go out of the coop. I always have a light on in the coop, all day. I refuse to lose any of my birds to cold if I can prevent it. Its supposed to warm starting later today and over the next week, depending on just how warm it gets they may go into the hutch or have to tough it out in a smaller coop for a week or so.

Sorry to hear about your hen.

Looks like today will be the last minus temperature day, then we are in the pluses again - suits me and my birds.

I live in Michigan but on the other side of the bridge. The Mackinaw Bridge that is.

This is pretty much the same setup I have but mine is rounded on top so the snow slides off and I use heavy duty clear plastic so when the sun shines it is more like a green house. I also use a light actually 2. 1 is a 100w regular bulb on a timer for laying and the other is a 100w red reptile bulb so they still have a regular sleep cycle.
