HOLY CRAP ITS COLD

I know what you mean with the tiny amount of Sunshine. Yesterday was so cold with the windchill that I put a heat lamp in the coop! I sat in with my birds just to see how cold it really was because my birds were quiet and all plumped up ~ I could see my breath and the metal nail heads in the walls were covered in frost, as was the entire door and both windows. I left the lamp on for a few hours and went in to check on them later in the evening. The only change was that I could no longer see my breath. But the birds were a little warmer and more comfortable. This morning their water will be frozen again. I will restraw the coop, that always makes it a little warmer for them.

This morning its light snow ~ this afternoon its Blizzard! Its nice when they are this accurate. Pretty 'breezy' right now and cold. Maybe my birds will stay in the coop today instead of going out into the uninsulated hutch. My meat hen, Henny, is still getting pecked; I made a box just for her to be 'safer' in. I think today I will put her in there with her own food and water and see how that goes.

Yes, I will post pictures of my little contraption! Stay Tuned...

Grudgingly I have to agree. Remember when we were kids and snow, even a mild blizzard wasn't enough to keep us indoors! I remember tobogganing down a very large, wide hill in mild blizzard conditions in Whitehorse. We couldn't see each other for the swirling snow and had to shout to find one another. If I were a kid, I think I'd appreciate it more. Instead I just trudged out the tote of fresh straw and 2 jugs of water, then came back to the house for the new 'Henny' box, which takes up even more room in the coop but she doesn't seem to mind being protected from my other, nastier hens. Then, back to the house for the food and treat... You know the drill.

Someone would report you for child abuse if you allowed your children to play outside in those condition now.

The fact that there is frost on the nail heads in your coop troubles me. I hope you have enough ventilation in the coop to get and keep the moisture down.

How closely does your climate jibe with Chicago's. The reason I ask is because next Monday Chicago's DAYTIME high is supposed to be a balmy -6 degrees Fahrenheit or -21 degrees Canadian. That is almost as cold as it was this morning at 6:30 AM in Barrow, Alaska.
In other words time to pull up another chicken and go back to sleep.

Very cold here in Rockford woke up to 17 below yikes and it is supposed to be even colder on Monday. I put a space heater in my coop I have a heat lamp but I could still see the girls breath this morning with and I don't want to lose anymore poor girls I don't envy them. This is record cold for our area. I was thinking about moving the girls into the garage for the cold snap it is not insulated and still gets cold but a little better sealed up what is everyone's thoughts on that?

Hubby says the coop is fine for our chickens. They are all adult and well feathered, as are our turkeys. As to ventilation, its a wooden coop house that is insulated but not air tight. It has two small windows on either side, front and back, that we used for ventilation over the spring to autumn months. I am in there every day and muck it out when it needs it. I keep a close eye on my birds for any signs of anything. Its supposed to get to 41F by Monday, a good day to muck out. Its 9 F (-11) right now with a north wind factor of 19 mph and light blowing snow. Although its going to get quite cold tonight. Right now I have my flock inside the coup, having the door open to the hutch cools the coop too much so they are staying in today.

I think Monday, when I muck out the coop, I will also put a tarp on the feeder side of the coop and the inside of the door. You'd be surprised how much it helps to insulate the inside. In fact, I could do that this afternoon and take pictures.

I'm always thankful this time of year to live in a more mild climate, although three or four weeks ago we got a cold snap that held on for over a week, got close to 13 inches of snow, my flock decided to stay in the coop for the duration :) Its not abnormal for us to get a few inches every year, but it always melts within a few days, Ive lived here for 26 years and Its never been that bad that I could remember. Of course the GW crowd is now saying this is all a part of global warming

It's REALLY cold here too! Well, it's 5 degrees. Warm compared to others here!

I like when we put the dogs out to go potty, and when they all come back in they're holding up their paws to warm them. One of them once tried to pick them all up at the same time and ended up doing a faceplant in the snow. THAT was funny. And sad. But mostly funny.
