Holy Crap! My brooder lamp exploded!!!

Wow, wow, WOW. I am so glad my new EcoGlow heater is being delivered today. I never thought about a heat lamp exploding.

I see people talking about FLOOD lights and HEAT LAMPS interchangeably. They are not the same. Flood lights do not put out the heat that heat lamps do. I think everyone needs to figure out what works best for them, but for me, I'm going the safe route. I don't want my house to burn down.

They do make lower wattage heat lamps than 250w. I think the first one I bought was a 125w and I got it at a feed store that had a lot of chicken supplies. The last one I bought was a 250w and, let me tell you, you can cook chicks with those if you're not careful.

Worse case scenerio would be the mom rejecting the chicks or a very poor mother. But it does not happen often.

I would call the manufacturer if possible. They need to know what happened. They might reimburse you, have an explanation, or find an issue and recall it. It was good you were home, or awake--- it could have been very tragic!

My last batch of chicks, I used a heating pad. It worked like a charm. But then we had a summer heat wave above 102 that took my little peeps:(. They were doing well for the first 4 weeks before the heat wave. If you go the pad route, be sure not to get the one with an "auto-shutoff". An older man at Walmart told me to try this(he did it for years), sometimes you get amazing tips from strangers. BUT, if you keep em outside in a barn... or live where it is super cold... I'd guess that method would be a bad one. Good luck!

Could water have splashed on it?

Oops. I just realized you misunderstood my question. I was asking the original poster what kind of bulb it was that exploded. The bulb you picture is a ceramic one, and is usually considered much sturdier than the glass bulbs.
