Holy Crap! My brooder lamp exploded!!!

After using both for many years, I will ONLY use the ceramic heat emitters now for both safety reasons and because I don't think chicks need a light shining in their eyes 24/7. See my post above about their day/night cycle.

What watts on the ceramic heat emitters? I have put two 35 gallon tubs together for my 12 chicks.

I use 100 watts for mine but they come up to 150 watts and for that size you might need the larger one. My 10 chicks are in just one 35 gallon right now. They will go to the heat source when they need it and move away when they don't.

I do agree with the fact that it was Made in China that made it explode and I don't care who knows but then again everybody knows that, even the Chinese. Anyway I would not put a dimmer switch on a 250 w heat lamp, the risk of fire is increased when you use a resistor/reostat like this especialy when using a high wattage heat source. I also put hardware cloth fitted to my brooder lamp hoods for safety.

I think you guys may have stumbled on to the answer to "the great chicken coop disaster of Sep. of '09" as we refer to it around here. I had just bought a new batch of broilers and a brand new red bulb the day before. I had gone to town for my one a month shopping trip the next day and came home to my entire coop/ greenhouse gone! Like nothing left but only the heaviest of steel things, rake heads, stirrup irons, everything else gone. I had used the same set up I had used time and time again, often times in the HOUSE! The only variable was that I had purchased a red bulb this time instead of the normal clear one, I always had bought the good pyrex glass and they were out so I grabbed the cheaper red one- I don't like to generalized but it was in fact made in China. Needless to say I lost everything except my layers who could get out of the coop. The chicks were brooding in the green house side and nothing could have gotten in there and disturbed the lamp so I figured it was safe. That was terrible, I lost all my tack, all my gardening supplies and numerous power tools and I just plain don't want to remember what else was in there. So I am off to Petco for some of these ceramic lamps, I was just plain lucky I was not brooding the chicks in the house as I always do in the spring. But on the upside I traded the greenhouse/ coop combo I built for one my overachieving helluva carpenter boyfriend built and it's even way bigger, it was dedicated to those 25 souls who lost their little fuzzy lives on that tragic afternoon. Moment of silence please....

Thanks for that info...Now would I need a special lamp for it? or can I use the lamp I got from Walmart that currently has my red heat lamp in it?

I do beleive you can use the same Lamp But I was going to ask the same thing. Let me look online or maybe someone else will chime in. I did check for the Lamp part in the Reptile section and they look the same. I will be back!

LOL...Ain't he purty! Believe it or not, he was given to us. He's such a MANLY rooster too! He's the daddy to all our babies....can't wait to see what we get since the mothers are BO and RIR mutts...they should be good egg layers

BTW.. I went ahead and ordered the 100watt on the reptile website. Though, let me know about the lamp...I didn't see anything special needed for the ceramic bulb.
